Late summer sunset

September 3, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Sometimes you don’t have to go any further than your backyard to capture Colorado’s amazing sunsets.

All that is left

July 25, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Colorado is steeped in mining history and this image captures the remnants of one near Taylor Park. The Collegiate Peaks rise well above timberline in the background with the old mine equipment serving as the foreground.

Shelf cloud and hail core over suburbia

July 10, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Taken not too far from my home in the north Denver metro area, this shelf cloud and the hail core beneath it was impressive.  Lightning was popping with regularity and I was dismayed to see people at the dog park (bottom right) not seeking shelter.

The core

June 11, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

During the early part of summer I spend a lot of time camping on the northeastern plains of Colorado.  One of the benefits is that the severe weather oftentimes comes to me and such was the case on this afternoon.

Severe storms were brewing and a Tornado Warning had been issued.  This storm cell passed to our northeast and had an amazing bright green hail core.

The lonely tree

June 7, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Storm chasing isn’t just about tornadoes to me. Oftentimes the best images are ones taken before or after a tornado as was the case with this picture. Taken in rural Kiowa County, Colorado, I had witnessed a rain-wrapped tornado earlier and just sat and watched Mother Nature in all her glory afterwards. The sky near the horizon had the orange of the setting sun while above the blue / green of hail in the clouds made it a bit ominous.

Eerie red cloud in the winter sky

January 5, 2012 by Tony Leave a Comment

Simply a ‘picture of opportunity.’  I was letting the dogs out when I see this stunning scene unfolding.  No color enhancement at all was applied to this image.  The sky was truly this deep of a red and the cloud formation looked exactly like that.  Perhaps an alien invasion?  😉

The presidents’ sunset

July 11, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

The Black Hills of South Dakota are one of my favorite places.  Certainly there are plenty of tourist attractions but the scenery can be stunning.

The image below was taken just as the sun was setting on my first nighttime visit to Mount Rushmore.  Smoke from nearby wildfires helped to color the sky and is particularly noticeable at the bottom left of the image.

The sun will rise again

February 4, 2011 by Tony Leave a Comment

A photo that has special meaning for me. Taken on a record-setting cold morning in Elephant Butte, New Mexico, this was the day after my dad passed away. I was raw with emotion and incredibly depressed as I left the hotel that morning to gather with my family. The scene of the sun rising was one which I will never forget and I well remember telling myself, “Well look. The sun did rise again.”  I miss my dad so much to this day but his memory and the memory of this scene help.

Glorious rural Colorado sunrise

December 19, 2010 by Tony Leave a Comment

Taken in Weld County, Colorado, the morning was bitter cold but as the sun rose between these trees my heart warmed. Colorado has the most amazing sunrises and sunsets and they occur at all times of these year. The bare trees, having shed their coverage for the winter, were darkened as the sun rose in brilliant orange.

Fiery sunset on the Colorado plains

June 10, 2010 by Tony Leave a Comment

Many folks find the Great Plains ‘boring’ and yes, it some ways they may be.  However I spend a great deal of time out there during the first part of summer and have learned to fully appreciate the landscape.  Sunsets can take on the most amazing and brilliant colors out there like they did on this day.
