Swainson’s Hawk flyby

Wildlife, landscape and weather photography
This young bald eagle took flight in Adams County, Colorado on May 13, 2014. It is the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America. It seems fitting to share pictures of our majestic national emblem on this auspicious occasion and I will do so a few times through the day today. Happy birthday, America!
A burrowing owl seems a bit annoyed with a neighboring prairie dog. Taken this evening at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. The burrowing owls are my latest obsession and I am getting frustrated. They are very, very difficult to find and notoriously shy not letting you get anywhere near close before heading into their holes. This will be my mission this weekend. 😉
A coyote this week gave me some decent looks just outside of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
It’s been a little while since I posted an #eagle shot. Here is another one of the many I took of this gorgeous one on Colorado’s eastern plains a couple weeks ago.
I have no idea what kind of flowers these are but they sure were pretty. Found them at an altitude of about 9,000 feet at Mueller State Park, Colorado.
Editor’s note, 7/7/14: I was informed on my Facebook page the flowers are Golden Banner.
I spent the weekend in the Colorado mountains but found little of interest in the way of wildlife other than this little guy. I think he was expecting a handout so was more than willing to stay low in the tree and let me take pictures.
Another shot of the bald eagle I took so many pictures of last week. On the last day of my vacation in northeastern Colorado, this majestic bird gave me a picture perfect flyby, as if to bid me farewell.
Another shot from the Colorado plains from last week. This very large bird provided a great subject, especially with the clear, blue skies. These birds are one of the biggest in North America with wingspans that can reach up to 10 feet across and lengths approaching 6 feet. They can appear a bit gangly and awkward but are in fact beautiful fliers. You can read more about them here: http://bit.ly/1nHibTT
