An unexpected and fleeting encounter with this cool bird. My friend and I were photographing an entirely different bird, a woodpecker, in a stand of trees. As we maneuvered to try to get pictures of the little bird, we unwittingly roused the owl, not even knowing it was there.
I quickly pivoted my camera to try to get some pictures of it as it departed, getting only a few frames. Certainly I would have preferred a more frontal shot but given the rarity of getting these guys in flight, I will take it.
