A gorgeous Rocky Mountain sunset. It isn’t too often I go take pictures in the evening (family comes first) but tonight I was able to and I was rewarded. Mother Nature put on a gorgeous show with a fiery sunset, beautiful clouds and the Colorado blue skies.
A gorgeous Sunday sunrise
Out and about this morning looking for Great Horned Owls my focus was for a time on the east as the sun rose. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets are a near daily occurrence in Colorado and this one was no different.

Boulder, Colorado farm photo trip
Visiting an old farm in Boulder, Colorado today for photos but actually I wasn’t to be the photographer. Instead, the family was having their pictures taken. Nevertheless, I had to bring my camera and snap a few shots.
Old farms remind me very much of my grandparents’ farm and I love taking pictures of them. The gnarled textures and bright but worn colors make great subjects. As a bonus there were some nice looking lenticular clouds on the way back.

Sunrise casts Colorado mountains in hues of pink and orange
A very chilly start in the pre-dawn hours as I set out to capture images of the setting full moon, the mountains and bald eagles. The moon and eagles turned out not to be the highlight of the morning.
Instead, the prize winner was this image taken as the sun rose and cast the mountains from Mount Audubon to Longs Peak in a gorgeous pink / orange. As seen from Golden Ponds in Longmont.

Mild early spring day provides a picture perfect view of Longs Peak
I was out and about today scouting a location near Longmont where I had heard about some bald eagle activity. While the eagles were not cooperating, Mother Nature was in a big way.
The mid-day sun made lighting a bit harsh but overall the image came out nice. The typically gorgeous blue Colorado skies, a snow-called Longs Peak and a couple of Canada geese helped complete the scene.
A smoky sunset on the Great Plains
June 20, 2012 – A smoky sunset on the Great Plains. The summer of 2012 was devastating in terms of the size and number of wildfires in Colorado. The largest of the season was the High Park Fire in the mountains west of Fort Collins. It was three weeks from the time it was first reported on June 9 to the time it was contained on June 30. In the interim it burned 87,250 acres making it the second largest wildfire on record in the state at the time.
While camping on the eastern plains on June 20 in Morgan County some 40 miles east, I took this picture. Stunning, orange sunsets in this area are not unusual but the smoke plume trailing across the horizon from the fire made this one quite different.

Stunning circular cloud formation at sunset
Sometimes the most amazing scenes come to you. This spectacular cloud occurred over the north Denver area on January 5, 2012 at sunset. I saw it as I was letting the dogs outside and, not wanting to miss the moment, grabbed my point-and-shoot which was sitting nearby. Certainly I wish I would have had my SLR handy in order to get a better quality image of this extraordinary event. However it goes to show that even the little cameras can get great pictures – if you are ready.

Hanging out with the bald eagles at Cherry Creek State Park
It won’t be long before the bald eagles leave Colorado and head north so I have to take the opportunities when I can. Back down at Cherry Creek State Park on a very cold morning they were quite compliant with having their photos taken.

Sunrise and bald eagles at Cherry Creek State Park
The rumors about a bunch of bald eagles at Cherry Creek State Park were too much for me to ignore. Thankfully they were true. A great morning!

It doesn’t get better than a bald eagle and the Rocky Mountains
I went down to Cherry Creek State Park this morning where I had heard there was a lot of bald eagle activity. That was an understatement as they seemed to be everywhere and I took a lot of good pictures of them. This was one of my favorites as it captured my favorite subject, a bald eagle, coupled with the snow-capped Colorado Rockies.
