Snaking crack in the ice leading to the rising sun

Looks cold, doesn’t it? Well, let me tell you, it was!

Last Sunday I ventured to Colorado’s far northeast plains and longtime followers probably recognize that bit of land and tree as I photograph it at least a couple times a year at sunrise. The clouds weren’t really anything impressive on this morning but there was just enough orange to color the horizon. What drew my attention though was at the lower part of the picture, a thick layer of ice with a crazy cool and fun snaking crack.

Visually it was beautiful but aurally it was pretty impressive too. The ice was making some crazy cool moaning sounds and some very loud pops that really got your attention.
