The full wolf moon and Mars shine bright in the night sky

Kind of a fun celestial scene last night. As the full moon rose in the east, it was joined by our red neighbor, Mars. Mars is extraordinarily bright now as it is in opposition (directly opposite the sun as seen from Earth).

When I stepped out into the cold winter night to take pictures, the planet was clearly visible with the naked eye, below and to the left of the moon. As for the moon, well, it looked big, bright and beautiful up there.

I look forward to the day when humans visit our nearest neighbor again – and then go on to Mars. We are long overdue.
