Northern lights put on a show in Colorado’s northern sky

Hold the presses! I had a different image planned for today but after last night’s show, this takes precedence.

Following an unusually strong coronal mass ejection (solar flare) from the sun, the chances to see the aurora borealis at more southern latitudes than normal grew. I was keeping an eye on the forecasts and data when I saw a friend of mine that lives in Nebraska (Hi, Alycia!) posted images of the show beginning in her area.

I began to get excited, knowing she was not that much farther north than the Denver area. Unfortunately, I was on dinner duty so hurriedly finished making our meal then woofed it down and ran out the door.

Our local fairgrounds were the chosen spot as I knew it would provide a clear view to the north. It was a beautiful thing to witness, stronger than the one I photographed last year and able to be seen (vaguely) with the naked eye. The camera helped really bring it all into view.
