The Milky Way bursts into view over the forest

Well, I have to thank Scout, my geriatric border collie for this image. Truly.

Our last stop on a week-long RV trip through western Colorado was Sylvan Lake State Park. I have been wanting to go there for a long time and we finally were able to work it into our itinerary. What can I say? So worth it! Just a gorgeous park, secluded (partially due to the cruddy road I would guess – haha) and a fantastic place to just disconnect.

Anyway, in the middle of the night at 1:00am Scout started pacing, keeping us awake which is very unlike him. Figuring he had to go out, I begrudgingly got dressed and took him out. As he took care of his business, I was overwhelmed by the sky above. Fantastic!

I don’t do astrophotography very often as I am lazy about getting up at ridiculous hours and, usually, walk away disappointed with the images I capture when I do. After he was done, I had to at least try and dug out my camera and tripod, swapped lenses, and headed back out. I have to say, I am pretty pleased with the result and didn’t mind the loss of sleep.

Thank you, Scout!
