The fifth time was the charm for finally being able to see these tiny little owls!
This pair has become quite the celebrities over the last couple of months, making themselves somewhat readily available for viewing and photographing. Persistence paid off and this past weekend I was finally able to see them.
Yes, they are crazy cute and, perhaps most notably, these dudes are tiny! Honestly, I don’t think you can appreciate how small until you actually see one – I know I didn’t. I saw the male fly into a nearby tree but completely dismissed it as “just another little brown bird.” Thankfully, another photographer who had seen them before said, “No, that was one of the owls.”
Sure enough, there was the handsome fellow, only about 6 inches long, hanging out in the relative openness of a bare tree. Soon, we spotted the female in an adjacent pine tree. For 45 minutes they hung out and while there wasn’t much action and my pics aren’t anything extraordinary, it was a thrill to see these elusive, little creatures of the forest for the first time.
