A look back at my personal favorite captures of these (usually) nocturnal birds taken during my 2020 photo year. Owls seem to capture the imagination unlike any other bird, probably due to the fact that while they are common, many go unseen. I know I certainly love taking their picture. Among the types of owls I photographed were the common great horned owl, the summer visiting burrowing owl and the lesser seen screech owl and barn owl.

Goodbye, 2019. The last of my recap photo slideshows, this one features my personal overall ‘top 50’.
This covers the gamut of every type of picture I have taken from landscapes to wildlife to astrophotography. Some images I like because of the subject matter, some because I was pleased with the composition and others just because of the story behind them.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these looks back at the previous year and hope you will follow along with me in 2020! From my family to yours, I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Wildlife
I do love taking pictures of wildlife and this past year allowed me to capture an extraordinary variety of creatures with my camera.
At home in Colorado the subjects vary greatly but throwing in Alaska this year allowed me to photograph many animals I had never even seen before. In this video are my favorite wildlife shots of the past year, from the tiny American pika to the massive #moose and the impressive brown bear.
Enjoy the show!
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Landscapes
Over the past year I have been extremely fortunate to take in many wondrous scenes that showcased the natural beauty around us.
From a sunrise on a 14,000+ foot mountaintop to an electrified thunderstorm at sunset on the Great Plains and brilliant, golden fall foliage to the insane blue of an Alaskan glacier, Mother Nature put on some amazing shows for me. Here are what I think were my top 25 landscape photos of 2019.
I hope you enjoy the show.
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Raptors
From little falcons to massive eagles, raptors are always a focus of my camera. These aggressive birds are fascinating to me and oftentimes, just thrilling to watch and a challenge to photograph.
Here is a look back at some of my favorite captures of them from the past year. Among the species you will see are the American kestrel, merlins, prairie falcons, red tailed hawks, Swainson’s hawks, Cooper’s hawks, golden eagles and of course bald eagles.
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Alaska
By far my ‘photo excursion of the year’. We headed north to our nation’s 49th state and spent two weeks exploring this amazing place.
The sheer size of Alaska and our desire to not rush through things meant we limited our travels but that didn’t limit the photographic opportunities. We focused on three main areas: Denali National Park, Seward with Kenai Fjords National Park and Homer with Katmai National Park and Preserve.
Through them all, the scenery was stunning, the wildlife just amazing. It was the trip of a lifetime and one I will treasure forever. Here is a look at my favorite pics from our trip to the northern frontier.
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Owls
Another photo subject worthy of their own slideshow as I look back on my top shots of 2019. Everyone loves owls, right?
I was very fortunate to have captured three different species of them with my camera.
The tiny, almost always sleepy, eastern screech owl is by far the hardest to find. Burrowing owls come to the plains in the spring and are one of the most entertaining forms of wildlife you could ever hope to see. Then, of course, you have the common but way cool great horned owl of which I was fortunate enough to observe a few, cool nests.

When I take pics of flying creatures, I do usually focus on raptors. However, every now and then I will train my lens on less aggressive birds. From ducks to pelicans and meadowlarks to egrets, small and large have all been captured by my camera. Here are some of my favorites from the past year.
Video: Top Shots 2019 – Bald Eagles
Between now and the end of the year, I will be sharing some photo slideshows I put together of my personal, favorite pictures of the past year.
Anyone who knows me knows well that my favorite photo subject is our national emblem, the bald eagle. I have long had a fascination with this amazing raptor so I oftentimes seek out these amazing creatures. Over the past year I have been privileged to photograph many of them and get some cool captures.
These are my ‘top shots’ from the past year of these majestic creatures.
With the new year, I do have a calendar dedicated to bald eagles. Check it out here.
