American pika up close and personal

Sometimes getting pics of these diminutive residents of high altitudes can be a challenge. They don’t usually like it when you intrude on their territory. As a result, I usually find it best just to stake out a spot on the rocks that they frequent and sit and wait. Eventually they will usually come out, forgetting that you are there. Such was the case with this little one back in August.

I was watching the rocks below me for activity when suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see movement. I slowly turned and found this cutie less than 10 feet away. I don’t know if it realized I was there or not but if it did, it decided I was no threat and hung around quite a while, giving me some great poses up close. I love all the detail in this capture including the reflection of the sun in its eye.
