Umm. Yeah, this happened. While it has been a few years, I have taken pics of some pretty good battles between mule deer bucks during the rut but never anything like this.
I arrived on scene to see these two clearly seeking the affections of the ladies. A pitched battle ensued, and they went back and forth with the sounds of their clashing antlers echoing across the terrain. As they did, they sent snow and brush flying and then, the bigger buck, sent the other buck flying as well! Absolutely insane!
After having been tossed and then shoved face first into the snow, the one buck decided to move on. I wasn’t sure I got the action but ended up with a great sequence. I’ll post more later but this was by far my favorite.
