With the last vestiges of it winter coat gone, this big boy looked quite handsome as he moved across the prairie. A bit of sepia tinting to the image gives it an Old West feel, evoking memories of when bison roamed freely and numbered in the millions. While those days are gone, conservation efforts have been very successful and bison have been reintroduced in many places they historically called home. In May 2016 the Bison became the official mammal of the United States, a fitting and long overdue honor. Taken at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Denver, Colorado.
