I am back from having spent five fantastic days camping in Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming. This was probably the one trip this summer that I was most looking forward to as I love our remote excursions the most. Of course I snapped plenty of pics, most of which were the hummingbirds. This one, however, stole the show in my mind. Last year in this same location I saw my first calliope hummingbird but failed to get decent images. This time, I tried harder and had pretty good luck. The male’s magenta rays shooting down its neck are very distinctive and set it apart from others. Making the bird even more unique is that the calliope hummingbird is actually the smallest bird in the United States. Cool stuff!
