Well, this was a bit of unexpected action this past weekend. My friend had spotted a Cooper’s hawk eating a meal (small bird or mouse) and we were photographing it as it dined. Suddenly, its mate flew in and briefly interrupted breakfast for some, well, “recreation.”
Afterwards, we continued to photograph the pair and discovered they were establishing a nest. It is interesting that within about a 75 yard radius, there is now the hawk nest, a kestrel nest and a great horned owl nest. This undoubtedly creates for some tense moments and I have already seen the Cooper’s and kestrels hassling the owls.
