Double beam buck pays close attention

Holy moly! Check out this dude! He is quite a celebrity at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge but I had not had much luck getting good captures of him – until yesterday.

This time of year, the crowds at the Arsenal can get to be a bit much, particularly as photographers crowd the bucks in an attempt to get “the shot.” I want no part of the hordes so usually just bypass the bucks if there are a bunch of folks around. Yesterday, my friend and I were able to find some spots separate from everyone else, giving me multiple opportunities to photograph this handsome fellow.

Double beam antlers are certainly non-typical and usually the result of damage to the pedicle that occurred in the spring when the antler was developing causing the main shaft to split in two. No matter the cause, he looks impressive as heck.
