Five years ago today: Snowy owl lifts off in suburbia

What an absolutely awesome experience in late December 2017 and January 2018. It started seeing one of these gorgeous owls on the far northeastern plains and not long after, one was hanging out in suburbia northwest of Denver. This image was taken on January 12, 2018, the last time I saw this snowy owl – or any other.

It was taking a break, mostly napping, on top of a house. Eventually it decided it was time to fly and much to my delight, took off right at me. I captured a nice sequence of images (despite the roof) and this is one I haven’t shared individually before. I clipped the tip of the wing but love the look at its wingspan, talons and those piercing yellow eyes.

It is pretty rare for them to come this far south and to my knowledge, none have been spotted in Colorado this year. For more of my snowy owl pics, see here
