This poor prairie dog had no idea this would happen – and neither did I. Usually the prairie dogs coexist with the burrowing owls in peace as they have a symbiotic relationship. Well, the young owls decided they were not going to tolerate this one’s intrusion.
Out of the blue, all four owlets took flight, chasing after the intruder, sending it scrambling for cover. I have seen a burrowing owl chase a prairie dog off before but never four – AT ONCE! Holy cow.
Taken a month ago on my last visit with these guys. Since then, they and the parents have become too spread out to photograph and will soon be heading south for the winter. I have a ton more pics of them yet to share.
