“Get off my back, little birds!”

A bison bull is less than happy when a flock of starlings decided to use its back as a perch. Normally the bison ignore the hitchhikers, but this guy wanted no part of them. It could be because there were just so danged many of them! They would land on his back and he should shake them right off. It was kind of amusing to see.

The relationship between large mammals and small birds like this is symbiotic. The birds will pick insects from the animal’s fur, providing themselves with a meal. In turn, the mammal gets a nice grooming and gets rid of parasites.
