Going back to a couple of weeks ago for this aerial predator as it tries to nab a meal. My friend had spotted it not far off the road, the initial pictures of the encounter I shared on Halloween. After posing at that spot for a bit, it flew off and we decided to see if we could find it again. Indeed we did as it was on top of a pole, quite out in the open.
It then dove to the ground disappearing into the tall grass. Unsuccessful on its hunt, it went to some nearby trees. There is stayed focused on the grass and some unseen prey. Again, it launched and dived toward the grass, a bit of action this image captures.
Unfortunately for the owl, it once again came up empty taloned and did decide to go somewhere more private, bringing an end to the encounter. It really was amazing to watch it hunt, particularly since great horned owls are largely nocturnal so to see one do it during the day is a rarity.
