Great horned owl tucks in tight to hide

Last weekend when checking my local great horned owl nest, I was able to spot dad pretty easily. Unfortunately for him, so did the neighboring Cooper’s hawk.

Calamity ensued as the hawk began pestering the owl, sitting nearby and raising a ruckus, sometimes taking shots at it. The owl fled briefly but the Cooper’s followed, continuing its harassment.

Coming back to its original spot near the nest, the owl, tucked itself in tight into a band in the tree to shield itself from attack and view. It seemed to work a the Cooper’s left, leaving the owl to finally rest.
