Magical merlin in the early morning light

This season I have had a hard time getting pics of these awesome little falcons. One has become a fixture in one of the areas I frequent but it just has not been cooperative. Yesterday, it finally gave me a chance. Yeah, it was kinda buried in the tree and it was lit from the side but I will take it. It ended up being a decent capture and that light worked well to put a catchlight in its eye.

Winters find these birds across much of the western United States and down into Mexico. Summers are spent in Wyoming, Montana and Canada. In medieval times, they were a favorite of falconers, particularly noblewomen, that called them “lady hawks.” Catherine the Great and Mary Queen of Scots famously hunted with them.
