Watching these guys fish is a lot of fun and trying to get ‘the shot’ of one as it dives is always a challenge. The angle of the osprey on this one isn’t ideal but still pretty cool and probably my favorite shot from this past weekend.
It captures the millisecond before the osprey impacts the water. In fact, it looks like its talons might be just touching the surface. You will notice too it has closed its nictitating membrane, its outer eyelid, in preparation of the splash.
When diving like this, osprey can hit speeds of 50mph so anytime you can get this kind of shot, you have to be happy. As for the osprey, well, it came up empty on this attempt and had to keep trying for its breakfast.
