My first encounter of the season with one of these fantastic raptors and an appropriate posting for #WingsWednesday. I was moving on to a different photo spot when this falcon launched out of the tall grass right beside me. Guessing it was in there because it had a kill, I backed off and sure enough, it returned to the same spot, disappearing in the grass. After a moment, it took flight again, clutching the feathers of another bird it had likely taken down, most likely a dove. I’ve seen prairie falcons hunt before and these guys are ferocious predators and do prey on smaller birds.
