Short-eared owl photo session in the woods

Full disclosure: This is a captive bird.

Probably my favorite subject from the raptor photo shoot I recently participated in with HawkQuest and Mike’s Camera. I have yet to get a quality picture of a short-eared owl in the wild, my only sightings have been very distant and yielded poor images. So, it was a bit of a treat to spend time with this captive one and the scene among the woods was top notch.

With the owl posing on a downed log among the foliage, I was able to get some cool captures and experiment with different perspectives. Someday I will have a good opportunity to photograph one in the wild but in the meantime, this is a pretty good substitute.
