Two out, one in as great horned owl owlets begin to branch out

Continuing the updates on my local great horned owl nest. When I checked on them last week, I saw two little ones. This week, there are clearly three – two of which have decided the family home was too crowded and have moved out.

As I approached the stand of trees I was pretty surprised to see two fuzzballs up high and cuddled up against each other in the chilly wind. Peering into the nest, there was another set of eyes peering out making three.

These guys grow fast and while they are a while away from flying, it is common for them to hop out of the nest and then climb nearby trees. Not to worry, the parents are well-aware of where they are and will continue to tend to them. Indeed, mama was nearby in her usual spot. I couldn’t find dad but he assuredly was keeping watch as well.
