We created a backyard agility course for our dogs as a way to exercise them and play with them. Our other dog, a border collie, is the type of dog most people associated with the activity but really, as we see here, any dog can do it. Ellie is what we call our ‘junkyard dog’ as she was rescued from the streets of an industrial area in Denver. She may be a bit small but she can handle the obstacles just like any other.
Fall colors in Pike National Forest
Fall in the Colorado high country brings the changing of the colors of the leaves as aspen trees turn golden. This image captures the stunning variety of colors from the golden leaves and the green pines to the blue sky above.

The Collegiate Peaks with a gorgeous blue Colorado sky
Colorado’s high country of course offers stunning scenery. On this summer day we were in the Taylor Park area exploring on our ATVs. In the foreground is Lily Pond, aptly named as the entire surface is covered in lilies. In the background, the Collegiate Peaks rise high above timberline and bright blue Colorado skies add drama.
Cold and snow don’t stop a Frisbee dog
One of my dogs, Scout, is a border collie and being true to his breed, he can be a bit obsessive. This particularly applies to playing ball or Frisbee. This late winter storm brought a healthy shot of snow but Scout could care less – he just wanted to play.

What’s going on back there?
A winter’s day out at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge found this coyote out and about. He was yipping back and forth with another coyote on the other side of the boundary fence and seemed troubled that he couldn’t get to the other.

A golden landscape with blue Colorado skies
Sunset at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge painted the landscape with a golden hue on this winter evening. Coupled with the typical, gorgeous blue Colorado skies, the image is warm and inviting.

Regal eagle
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Denver is a veritable cornucopia of photo opportunities. Usually the bald eagles here are too far away to capture images of but on this day this particular eagle was perched right by the entrance to the refuge. I was almost giddy as I got within 50 feet of the amazing bird.

If looks could kill
The bison at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge provide an extraordinary photo opportunity not far from home for folks in the Denver area. The large herd allows people to get quite close, oftentimes right outside their vehicle.
On this day I was taking photos of the herd when I noticed this bull watching me very closely. The look was quite intense and definitely gave me an uneasy feeling.
When I got home and processed the image, it lacked the sharp focus it should have had due to camera operator error. I didn’t want to lose the shot though and began playing around with some post-processing effects.
Softening the image a goof bit, increasing the contrast and brightening the backdrop helped cover my lack of proper focus and I believe added even more intensity to the icy stare of the bison, particularly with the glint of its eye.

Hawk fly by
Lucky enough to have this hawk make a very nice fly by on this day.

Old west meets new
Taken at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife refuge, this was an image I had seen in my mind for a long time. The weather cooperated with beautiful, clear blue skies and the bison was kind enough to position itself perfectly. This to me is an iconic Denver image.
