One of the few decent shots of Bald Eagles I got today. Went to Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado where lots have been seen lately. Unfortunately with our recent cold here the lake is pretty much totally frozen over and most of the eagles appear to have moved on in search of open water.
High wire Ferruginous Hawk
The largest of the Buteo family of hawks, these raptors are common across the western half of the United States. I’ve found them more tolerant of human presence that some other hawks like Red Tails, and can often approach pretty close to them. Image taken on December 7, 2014 in rural Adams County, Colorado.
Wile E Coyote out for a morning jog in the snow
I really wanted this beautiful guy to stop and pose but he was clearly on a mission and just jogged right on by this morning. Taken at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado.
Black and white bison
This big guy was out for a walk in the snow yesterday at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Colorado.
These massive animals were hunted to the brink of extinction in the 1700s and 1800s with as few as 750 reported by 1890. Their numbers have since rebounded with about 500,000 living on public and private lands.
Magic merlin
A little bit of Merlin magic. I have seen these little falcons a few times but never seemed to be fast enough to get a good shot – until today. I came across a couple Merlins northeast of Denver, Colorado this morning. This one in particular was nice enough to sit still for a few pictures. Like most raptors, these little guys can be quite vicious and have been used since Medieval Times by falconers.
Sunrise sentinels
Taken at St Vrain State Park in northern Colorado, two Bald Eagles were keeping watch as the sun rose last weekend.
Do you hear what I hear?
“Do you hear what I hear?” Remember that He is the reason for the season! I wish you all a very, Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. God Bless!
Even eagles have to itch
Even eagles have to itch! Well, either that or this guy was giving me a bit of a “middle finger salute” – you decide which. 😉
Funny buck
his handsome mule deer buck appears to be having a good laugh – perhaps at the expense of the photographer? 😉 Taken November 28, 2014 at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
Wood Duck gets a close up
I’m not normally one to take pictures of water fowl but Wood Ducks are just pretty darned cool. This handsome guy was hanging out in a Denver area pond back in October. The coloring is just brilliant on these birds.
