A castle in the clouds

Castle Mountain (also called Castle Cliffs) dominates your view as you drive along the Bow Valley Parkway in Banff National Park. It is an impressive sight and on this day last month, made even more beautiful by low clouds that were passing by its face.

Named by explorer James Hector in 1858, the mountain was renamed to Mount Eisenhower in honor of World War II general Dwight D Eisenhower. That lasted from 1946 to 1979 before the mountain’s name was returned to its original. Now only the eastern-most tower (not in view) bears the former U.S. president’s name.
