Birds descend on local pond after fish die off

Quite an interesting scene at a local pond this week. Due to an algae bloom, the fish at this pond had suffered a massive die off. That drew the attention of many birds, none too shy to take advantage of the easy meal to be had.

The mid-afternoon sun was a bit harsh but it was fun to see so many birds in such a small area. The snowy egrets, in particular, were there en masse with probably 100 of them. Joining in were a dozen or more pelicans and some surprisingly cooperative black-crowned night herons.

Gru of Despicable Me fame hangs out in Colorado

Gru of Despicable Me fame hangs out in Colorado. Okay, maybe not, but I swear these Black-crowned Night Herons bear an extraordinary resemblance. 😉 I have only gotten pictures of these birds a few times so when I happened across one recently, I did my best stealthy approach to try to get a decent capture. Crouching down, I waddled like a duck through some tall grass, contorting myself to get this picture of the red-eyed creature as it kept watch on the water for a meal.

Juvenile heron and egret have a disagreement

June 30, 2015 by Tony Leave a Comment

With the heat of summer settling in, my after work photo excursions have been limited as the wildlife hides from the hot temperatures.  Today, instead, I spent my lunch hour at Denver City Park with these beautiful birds.

In this sequence, a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron doesn’t want to share its spot of the pond with a similarly young Snowy Egret. Mama Egret swoops in though and sets the young ones straight. It was a lot of fun to watch.
