American kestrel takes flight

A nice show from this handsome fellow a couple of weeks ago. Normally I find these falcons perched on wires which make for a less than ideal image. On this day, this male American kestrel chose a more natural perch and gave me some nice captures. After posing, it decided it was time to fly and I was able to capture the entire sequence, this image being my favorite of the bunch.

While they are North America’s smallest raptor, they are no less ferocious than any of their bigger cousins. They have incredible hunting skills, oftentimes hovering over a field and then dropping mercilessly on unsuspecting rodents.
