In actuality, this mule deer buck was marking its territory by rubbing against this bush. He did this for five minutes, ensuring any other bucks coming by knew he was around.

Deer have several glands that emit odors, including three on their heads. Secretions from these serve to communicate to other animals.

Taken soon after sunrise at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday morning.
