Mama bald eagle takes a break from the nest for a morning delight

Little eagles are on their way! 😉

I visited my favorite eagle nest Sunday and was initially discouraged. Sitting and waiting for over 45 minutes there was nothing to be seen – at all. Finally, out of nowhere, the male returned carrying a stick and did a quick flyby of the nest. Much to my delight, mama then popped up out of the nest – I didn’t even know she was in there as she was hunkered down so low.

She briefly took flight across the river and soon both her and her mate were at one of their favorite perches nearby. The two then enjoyed a rather boisterous mating session, as seen here. She returned to the nest and hunkered back down afterwards.

Given her behavior, I have to assume there is at least one egg already in there and the activity was an attempt for more. So, in roughly 35 days, if all goes well, there should be a hatching. I’ll be hoping all goes well for these longtime friends and they enjoy another successful season.
