Northern flicker stands guard over the wildlife refuge

Just so we are clear, this is a staff road and no visitor access is allowed. This member of the woodpecker was ensuring the rules were strictly adhered to. A fitting image as this is National Wildlife Refuge Week, a time set aside to honor this nation’s system of protected lands and waters.

Certainly, I am lucky to have one of the premier refuges, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, close to home. It is an amazing place for which I am thankful to have easy access to. There are almost 600 national wildlife refuges across the nation, all providing opportunities for citizens to experience wildlife, land and sea that they would not be able to otherwise.
