Spring is peeking out – and soon so will these guys

A friend and I were talking this weekend about our favorite springtime critters and discussing when they would be arriving. My mind instantly went to the burrowing owls. These pint-sized birds pack more personality into their body ounce for ounce than just about any creature and are a ton of fun to watch and photograph.

Looking back through my pics from recent years and when I first photographed them each season, we could be seeing them in another couple of weeks. Last year it was March 24th, the earliest of the past six years, but most years it seems like the second week of April is prime time for their arrival.

This image harkens back to March 30th of last year and one of the first of the season I spotted. It wasn’t too sure about the guy with the camera so didn’t want to come out and play but did give me this fun capture.
