Wood duck performs a picture-perfect flyby

Well, I sure am not complaining about this capture!

Ducks are certainly not a top subject of mine but every now and then I will take some snaps of them. It had been a couple years since I visited this hot spot for wood ducks so Sunday, I figured it was time to go again. Of any ducks we get here in Colorado, they are by far the most beautiful and colorful.

As I was photographing some of the handsome fellows picking up crabapples from under a tree, someone came walking down the path. I figured the ducks would flee to safety and indeed they did. For most of the flight the light was poor but for an instant, this one passed through a gap in the shade from the trees allowing its colors to pop nicely.

A lot of luck was involved as I only got two decent captures of probably 20 in the flight sequence but I will take it. I have some more cool shots of these guys in the water with some fall color reflections but am most excited to share this one first.
