
While these residents of the Colorado plains are here year-round, it is during the warmer months that you really notice them. They perch on plants and fences and call almost constantly with a flutelike melody that is unmistakable. This one put on a nice show for me yesterday as it sang from a mullein plant.
Interesting fact… The western meadowlark is the state bird of six states – Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming. The northern cardinal is the only bird with more states (seven) honoring it as one of their official symbols.
