I was having a heck of a time getting out the door promptly yesterday morning and looking east I knew it was going to be a good show. While I missed the best part of sunrise, I did manage to arrive at my destination just in time to catch the sun bursting over the horizon. I wish you a very blessed Easter. He is risen!
Hazy layers of mountains in front of the Mile High City
One for Throwback Thursday going to July of last year. After taking in a stunning sunrise, my friend and I lingered, soaking in the view to the east from 14,000 feet. While the brilliant oranges that led up to sunrise had faded, the scene still looked pretty cool. Smoke from wildfires out of state had settled in creating a cool haze showcasing the smaller mountains below us. Off in the distance and to the far left just beyond the mountains you can actually make out downtown Denver and its skyscrapers. While those buildings are tall, they are dwarfed by Mother Nature’s work not far to the west. You can guess which location I prefer!
Ice shows the signs of the spring thaw
Something different from me. What to do when the eagles aren’t cooperating and you are frustrated? Slow down, take a deep breath, and take in what is right next to you. Such was the case this past Sunday.
I had driven a long way to photograph my favorite subject and it just was not panning out. As I grew frustrated, I made myself settle down and took a look at some of the smaller, non-living elements that were right next to me.
As the temperatures warm, the ice is thawing and creating some cool scenes – if you just take the time to notice. I did and am thankful to have done so. No doubt something I should do more often.
Frost, fog and blue skies on the Colorado Front Range
A gorgeous – but very cold – morning on the plains yesterday. The thermometer on my truck said 14 degrees and it certainly felt like it. Nevertheless, it was beautiful. At points the fog was so thick that you couldn’t see more than 10 yards but in others, where it opened up, you really got a cool view. Here, the frost coated the grasses and trees while fog, looking almost like smoke, hung near the horizon. Above, those unbelievably blue skies we love in the Centennial State.
Colorado balloon flying high for 303 Day
March 3rd or 3/3 is known as 303 Day, a day in which we use the original Colorado area code to celebrate the Centennial State.
Being a Colorado native and having lived here my entire life other than my time in the Navy, I take great pride in this place that I call home. Like many longtime residents, I do sometimes lament the tremendous growth we have seen and some of the changes that came from it but it still is a pretty cool place to live.
As for this image, it was taken back in November when I spent a good chunk of the morning following this beautiful balloon as it floated in the air on the Colorado Front Range. The view of it and the snow-covered Rocky Mountains pretty much scream, “Colorado.”
Lone tree on the foggy Great Plains
Going back to early last month. The weather was not particularly conducive to wildlife photography as the fog was ridiculously thick preventing anything resembling a clear shot. As a result, I changed my focus (pun intended) to seeing what I could do with the fog-shrouded landscape.
This tree wasn’t all that far off in the distance and the fog was dense enough that the scene behind it disappeared. A conversion to black and white eliminated what little color there was and makes the capture a bit more moody.
Moonset above the snow-covered Rocky Mountains
With fresh snow covering the plains and mountains a couple of weeks ago and a setting full wolf moon, the scene was a pleasant one. Yeah, it was cold, but so worth it.
Deer does under a stunning sunrise
The early morning show to the east was so gorgeous last Sunday it seemed like even the deer were taking notice. Leaving the house, I had a feeling it was going to be a nice sunrise so I hurried to my destination.
As luck would have it, three deer does were grazing at the top of the hill. The silhouettes of the deer and the trees provided some foreground interest and that backdrop… Well, what can I say. Just awesome!
The setting full wolf moon
A beautiful morning on the Colorado plains yesterday. Sunrise was stunning as you saw from my pic this AM and turning around and looking west, our only natural satellite was not to be outdone. The silhouetted trees provided a bit more interest.
Sunrise across a frozen pond
The early morning show yesterday morning didn’t get quite as impressive as I had hoped but it wasn’t too bad.
It was a typically cold morning with temps around 20 degrees so not too bad to be out there standing around, particularly with views like this. The horizon lit up beautifully and the clouds had a good bit of interest to them. Even above the orange, the feathery, wispy clouds looked pretty.
