Bald eagle banks hard, begins its dive

You don’t normally get to see the back of a bald eagle with its wings fully spread in flight so this is kind of a fun, different and dramatic capture.

A little pond was the site of a ton of activity recently. The water had begun to thaw revealing a bounty of fish that had died, frozen in the ice, and were now emerging making for easy meals. Area bald eagles took notice and as many as 10 at a time descended on the pond, making for an extraordinarily fun photo opportunity. So much fun, in fact, I shot over 3000 pictures in two afternoons!

This adult bald eagle had circled the pond a couple of times and finally selected a target. As it did, it broke hard left and began a fast, powerful dive. This allowed me to capture this not-often-seen view of our national emblem. I captured many pics that were probably “better” but I do really like this one just because it is “different.”

As those of you Colorado know, we have been enduring days of Arctic cold this week and the pond has re-frozen and the eagles have moved on. They may return once it thaws again but my experience tells me that is unlikely. That is a bummer but it was so much fun while it lasted!

Have a great weekend and TGIF!
