Female Belted Kingfisher on a cold, winter’s day

These cool birds with the spiked ‘hair’ have always been a bit of a ‘white whale’ for me. They are notoriously skittish, always shying away from the camera, and I just have never had any luck getting pics of them. Out for a walk at Barr Lake State Park, Colorado yesterday as a snowstorm was winding down, I finally found one that was willing to let me get a couple of captures. She didn’t sit still for long and the lighting wasn’t very good but I am glad to have gotten what I did.
