Horned puffins in Kenai Fjords National Park

The second species of these cool birds that I photographed while in Alaska. They were quite abundant and we were able to visit a few spots with them, including along the rock cliffs where they make their nests. If you look close you will see how they get their name – small, black fleshy “horns” above their eyes.

The adults will head out to the North Pacific for the winter, spending it at sea. Juveniles will go as well, but they will spend their first two years entirely at sea, only returning to breed in their third year. Thank you to Northern Latitude Adventures for an amazing excursion.
