A fun encounter with this woodpecker. My friend spotted it underneath a tree, busily pecking at the ground, I expect looking for a bug to eat. It was quite focused on the hunt and as a result, let us creep right up to it for some cool captures. These are the most common type of woodpecker here on the Colorado Front Range. Sometimes it can be hard to be a fan of them though as they can be quite destructive. Last year we had one go to town on what started as a little nick in our siding, turning it into a big hole that required a piece of siding and some trim to be replaced.
