An unusual goose pays a visit to Colorado in the winter

Kind of like a game of ‘one of these things doesn’t belong,’ I spotted this unusual goose among a gaggle of our ever present and overwhelming Canada geese last week. It was quite content hanging out with the more common geese and gave me the opportunity to grab some pictures of it. Coming home, I started searching to figure out what it was and, near as I can tell, this would be a juvenile greater white-fronted goose. They do come through Colorado during migration periods. However, they spend winter in the Pacific states, Texas, and Mexico. Summers are spent in Alaska and northern Canada. They often migrate with their family so it would appear this young one got separated from its parents and decided the Centennial State was a nice place to winter over. Obviously not the type of bird I normally photograph but as it was unusual, it was kind of fun and I wanted to share it.
