Ferruginous hawk chills out in the snow

Patience. That is one trait these raptors have. You will oftentimes find them just like this – sitting in a field and waiting for an unsuspecting prairie dog or rabbit to pop up. When the prey appears, they spring into action, nabbing their meal. These guys are some of my favorite hawks with their gorgeous plumage and that bright, yellow gape.

Fun fact… The ferruginous hawk is one of only three raptors in North America that have feathers that go to their feet, the other two being the rough-legged hawk and the golden eagle.
