I decided I needed a “me day” so I took today off work. Headed to a spot near Fort Collins, Colorado that had been rumored to be seeing a lot of activity. It did not disappoint at all. Still sorting through the hundreds of pictures I took but here is a preview.
Liftoff! We have liftoff!
My friend didn’t really want to play today and made me work for the very few pictures I got. Nevertheless, managed a few good ones including this one of him / her launching into the air.
Hot pursuit!
A juvenile Bald Eagle pursues a Ring-billed Gull that had just snatched a fish from a pond. No doubt the gull was quite alarmed to look back and see this large raptor giving chase. The gull in fact dropped the fish and immediately took evasive maneuvers to escape (and was successful in doing so). Image taken this past Sunday at a pond near Denver, Colorado, USA where gulls and eagles had gathered to fish.
Bald Eagle goes fishing
Yesterday I was extremely lucky to come across a pond along the South Platte River where a half dozen Bald Eagles were hanging out. Standing in sub-freezing temperatures for two hours, I and a friend enjoyed an amazing show as the eagles dove at the lake catching fish.
I captured multiple sequences, this probably being the best. I am disappointed in the quality but given the heavily overcast skies, it was tough shooting action in such low light. Scroll down to view all images in the sequence.
Regal eagle keeps watch on a cloudy day
This Bald Eagle has been hanging out in a nearby park and was in its usual spot when I came home from work yesterday. Naturally had to stop to marvel at it and snap some pics. Bummed about the drab, gray skies but not too bad of an image. If you want to see more of my Bald Eagle pics, you can easily find them here.
3, 2, 1, Liftoff! We have liftoff!
Do Bald Eagles shiver?
Do Bald Eagles shiver? 😉 I’m not sure if they do but that is kind of what it looked like this one did this as it shook itself vigorously. The image is probably a good candidate for a ‘caption this’ contest .
Last year this particular tree on the South Platte River near #Denver saw a lot of Bald Eagle activity during the winter. Unfortunately with a number of heavy construction projects in the area and quite a few other roosting trees torn out as a result, activity this year has been far more subdued.
A friend called Sunday and let me know this one was hanging out so my wife and I rushed down there and spent some time sitting on the opposite river bank just watching. The image isn’t best quality due to the distance we were from the eagle but it is still fun to see.
Bald Eagle proudly hangs on to its squirrel catch
It was a good day for a certain Bald Eagle, not so much for a squirrel. This gorgeous eagle put on quite a show in a suburb north of Denver, Colorado, USA this afternoon.
Perched high on a tree next to a busy park, it sat for a very long time watching the people, all the while clutching its catch. It finally decided it wanted to enjoy its meal in private and headed off to a less conspicuous location.
Very vocal female Bald Eagle
This pair of eagles was initially in two separate trees and I has happily snapping pictures of the male alone (head down in this pic). Apparently the female wanted to get into the picture and flew over to join her mate.
Upon her arrival she became very, very vocal and the male held its head down, seemingly demurring to the female. The entire series of pics from that day is in my top three favorites that I have ever taken of these majestic raptors.
Picture perfect flyby
This Bald Eagle has been hanging out in a suburban area north of Denver lately just a few minutes from my house. When I saw it Sunday it was perched in its usual spot but not long after I arrived it decided to go somewhere else. Thankfully it obliged me with an absolutely beautiful flyby accented by our usual deep blue Colorado skies.
