One day after work last week I made a stop at a local open space to fly my drone. Ideally, I was hoping to get some cool fall foliage pics but the scenes weren’t as nice as I had hoped. Strong winds the day before had knocked a lot of leaves off the trees and it was a bit early in the day so light was harsh. Nevertheless, I managed to get what I think are some pretty cool captures. I am fascinated by just how differently things look from above. Some of the images have quite a lot to take in as you look at them.
Drone’s eye view of a fall sunset
I threw the drone up for a look at tonight’s sunset near Denver, Colorado in the City of Thornton. The colors didn’t develop quite like I had hoped but it was still a pretty scene.
Fall drone flight along the South Platte River
Having completed my critter captures for the day yesterday, I decided to put up my rarely used drone and get some shots.
The weather was calm and mild although the overcast skies were kind of a bummer. The overhead vantage point of the drone did provide some cool captures though and showcase the fall foliage that is beginning to peak along the Colorado Front Range.
Pay particular note of the first shot… Can you recognize what is in the water to the bottom middle? Kind of neat.
Tornado strikes the northern Colorado Front Range
Pictures taken by my drone not 20 minutes ago. I was scrolling through Facebook and heard the news about a tornado dropping near Firestone.
I ran downstairs, grabbed my drone and put it in the air to catch the tail end of the twister before it dissipated. Not the greatest pics but considering the distance of about 15 miles, not too bad.
As this happened so recently, I have no idea what damage was done or if anyone was injured. Certainly folks in the affected area are at the forefront of my mine right now.
Timelapse video of the CalWood Fire
Shot with my drone, this video shows six minutes compressed to 30 seconds.
Another wildfire in Colorado
This one just exploded over the past couple of hours. Dubbed the CalWood Fire, the town of Jamestown is being evacuated as the fire burns out of control. I shot these with my drone from my home, about 30 miles away.
Cameron Peak Fire smoke plume creates a colorful sunset
A beautiful sunset this evening but, unfortunately, due to the Cameron Peak Fire which flared up this afternoon due to record high temperatures and strong winds. Massive smoke plume from the blaze (bottom right) as seen from Thornton, Colorado. Taken with my DJI Mavic Pro drone.
Aerial view of a gorgeous Colorado sunset
Sitting out on the patio with my wife tonight watching this unfold, I couldn’t resist and went and threw the drone up for a nice look at tonight’s sunset on the Colorado Front Range. Sigh. I do love this place and will never tire of scenes like this.
Bird’s eye view of island looks like an abstract
This isn’t a view you see very often! Taken from an altitude of 400 feet and looking straight down, this is a small island in a local open space near where I live.
Taken this past Sunday, I was looking to get a unique image and think this one qualifies. Those little white dots you see in the water are Canada Geese.
My drone will never be used to capture as many pics as my ‘real’ camera but it does have its uses and can create some pretty cool images.
Fall colors on the Colorado Front Range as seen from the air
A bit of an elevated look at some of the color on what was a fantastic day. The leaves were golden, the sky blew and the mountains capped in white snow. My brother got a new drone and he wanted to go out flying and I have rarely used mine so it was a good opportunity to play around. Don’t worry, while the drone stuff is fun, it will never take the place of the types of pics you are used to seeing from me. 😉
