American pika emerges to soak in the warm spring sun

After spending the last several months hiding from the cold and buried under snow above 14,000 feet, this cute little one was undoubtedly glad to feel the sun on its body once again this past weekend.

Pika don’t hibernate, surprisingly enough. Instead, they stay active during the winter in the tunnels under the rocks and snow, relying on the plants they spend all spring and summer caching for sustenance. I didn’t really expect to see one so early in the season, but this one was out and about and judging by nearby calls I heard, it wasn’t the only one.
