First owlet of the year peeks out at the shutterbug

Needing to just go for a walk after work yesterday, I headed to a local open space that has my favorite great horned owl nest. While I knew cruddy afternoon light would be tough, I hoped I would get my first look at the owlets I had suspected were coming.

Initially, I couldn’t see anything but after getting in some steps I returned and one had stuck its head up high enough for an obscured view. I suspect there are more in there but this one was the only one brave enough to stick its head up and give me a look.

Dad and Mom were keeping watch nearby although Dad did get hassled by a Cooper’s hawk briefly – he was not happy about that.
