Horned Lark puffs up against the cold

I don’t normally take pictures of ‘little birds’ but I simply had to train my camera on this guy. Temperatures yesterday morning were in the single digits and a thick hoar frost had covered the Colorado plains while the Rocky #Mountains were blanketed in fresh snow.

Small birds tend to be quite skittish but the cold seemed to have this guy unwilling to fly and he was quite willing to pose for me as he huddled on a barbed wire fence. Unfortunately he never did raise his ‘horns’ – little sections of black feathers on the back of the head – but he was quite photogenic even without.
