A skunk works its way through the snow at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado.
A few folks in an online photography group had snapped some pics of these in the last few days. Having never taken any images of one, I had to go see – or smell – what I could find.
Sure enough, this guy (or gal) was lumbering along, clearly on a mission. Unfortunately the terrain had lots of tall grass so I was only able to capture a few shots before it disappeared. Kind of fun – and it didn’t smell too bad. 😉
A male American Kestrel scratches the side of its face while its mate looks on. With mating season here, I am seeing lot more raptors hanging out in pairs. Such was the case of these little falcons a couple of weeks ago.
I don’t normally take pictures of little birds but these are pretty cool so I couldn’t resist. Found across all of North America, they are typically found in open country where there is little vegetation. They have a very pleasant song / chirp. Learn more here.
Three Bald Eagles roost in snow covered trees at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado yesterday.
The eagles were plentiful yesterday but not particularly willing to pose for pictures, perhaps wanting to hunker down and wait out the coming snowstorm. The overall quality of this image isn’t as nice as I would like but I think the cropping and composition are kind of cool.
This coyote was out foraging this morning in the fresh snow at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado. Tough day of shooting today with poor lighting and a bunch of rather uncooperative subjects.
Pirouetting Bald Eagle? Nah, not really. I just happened to snap this pic just as this gorgeous juvenile Bald Eagle was launching into the air. An unusual pose but I really like the picture. Certainly at the stage of development this eagle is in, they aren’t as regal looking as a full adult. However, I think they look pretty darned cool nevertheless.
One of the cool things about taking pictures of animals is the ability to freeze a moment in time. You then get to see subtleties that you might not have noticed when the event happened.
In the case of this majestic raptor, you see its intense stare as it looks toward its target and the nearly perfect ‘L’ of the angle of its wings as it banks hard in pursuit. When watching it ‘live’ I simply saw the eagle make a nice flyby, never seeing the details.
A mule deer buck works to get some roughage into its mouth for its breakfast. This buck was very handsome with a great looking rack. Taken at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge? on January 31. 2015.
Taken last May, this Great Horned Owl male was on its way from a nearby stand of trees to the nest where its mate and their three owlets were roosted.
The same pair has been busy lately prepping the same nest for another group of offspring with Mama regularly sitting in the nest and Dad nearby. I haven’t been too successful getting pics of them yet beyond mom’s head sticking up a bit. Last week I caught a fleeting glimpse of dad as he flew around and then hid from me.
